Thing 5-Wait Wait!

So I have been using my Google Reader since last semester (Fall 2010) and did not have a lot of good "things" to read.  With the new additions, it is slowly becoming my favorite thing!  Happily, I am using it mostly for my addiction to "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!"  I have been working in my classroom while listening to my favority NPR show that I rarely catch when I am in the car.  This is how I learn my news...how else would I have known about Usher and Homer Simpson have a song in common???? (Episode 1/8/11)  I also got to learn about Snookie's new book...I guess that is a good thing?

I have not only been listening to podcasts, but have actually read somethings.  I read an article on how to take the Harry Wong Teacher Effectiveness Quiz.  I do believe that Harry Wong knows a lot about classroom management, but I do not agree with my results.  I fell into the "Good job! You are a master teacher." range.  However, I do not feel I am a "master teacher."  There is more to classroom management then just answering questions...implementation is where the heart of the matter lies!  Give it a shot though...it is interesting!

  1. I have got to add "Wait Wait" to my Reader. I love sites like that! I agree, since I've started using my Reader, the information I have been taking in is phenomenally multiplied when compared to the few sites I visited daily before.

Thanks so much for the Harry Wong link! I haven't read any Harry Wong in so long, and I feel I need to revist his writings, since I'll be jumping back into teaching here in the near future sometime.

Since you teach 8th grade, have you ever used RSS feeds with your students?

  2. I took the Harry Wong quiz and I got the same response as you, "Good Job! You are a master teacher." I think it gave me more credit than I deserve. I'm also a fan of Harry Wong. I still take his book out to brush up on management tips, etc... I will have to check out the "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me."

  3. I have always seen the orange square and never thought much of it. After this assignment I have been looking for it on all my common websites that I visit. I also like that you can subscribe to podcast. I use the NPR Science Fridays. Before it would come through my itunes and only update if I opened it. I don't like to open itunes because my computer does not like it too much so I would miss out on the podcast. Now that I get it I can hear it at work during planning or any where I can connect to a computer (even my phone).

Just got to becareful to not overload the reader. It will be just a bunch of post that are useless. I will need to do some spring cleaning from time to time. Need to see which one I won't really check or use to be able to remove them.

  4. Oh, wow! Whitney, I love the NPR site, too. I love history and subscribed to the NPR Georgia Stories. I also subscribed to a book and several music sites. I had to stop myself or I would have added too many. I'm glad you are finding your Reader to be so helpful to you. That is encouraging!

  5. I loved taking the Harry Wong quiz, it was fun, but I don't think I'll let the quiz tell me what kind of teacher I am. There is a BIG difference in knowing and doing, you know? But it was fun!!
I checked out, "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me", and loved it! I hate to admit, I'm not much of an NPR listener, or a radio listener at that, but it was a great find! Thanks for sharing!!
